There was a movie awhile back called, “The 40 Year Old Virgin”. It was made as a comedy.
“Despite his age, Andy has never had sex, so his friends, including the laid-back David (Paul Rudd), push Andy towards losing his virginity. While attempting to get over his awkwardness around female customers, Andy meets local shop owner Trish (Catherine Keener), and they begin a tentative romance.”
And as you can guess, by the end of the movie Andy was no longer a virgin.
It’s funny because the thought of a man that would still be a virgin at that age is rediculous… right? No.
God takes being chaste very seriously. Let’s look at a few scriptures on virginity.
Deut 13-22 “13 If a man takes a wife and, after sleeping with her(A), dislikes her 14 and slanders her and gives her a bad name, saying, “I married this woman, but when I approached her, I did not find proof of her virginity,” 15 then the young woman’s father and mother shall bring to the town elders at the gate(B) proof that she was a virgin. 16 Her father will say to the elders, “I gave my daughter in marriage to this man, but he dislikes her. 17 Now he has slandered her and said, ‘I did not find your daughter to be a virgin.’ But here is the proof of my daughter’s virginity.” Then her parents shall display the cloth before the elders of the town, 18 and the elders(C) shall take the man and punish him. 19 They shall fine him a hundred shekels[a] of silver and give them to the young woman’s father, because this man has given an Israelite virgin a bad name. She shall continue to be his wife; he must not divorce her as long as he lives.
20 If, however, the charge is true(D) and no proof of the young woman’s virginity can be found, 21 she shall be brought to the door of her father’s house and there the men of her town shall stone her to death. She has done an outrageous thing(E) in Israel by being promiscuous while still in her father’s house. You must purge the evil from among you.”
I Cor 6:9 (b) “Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor men who have sex with men…..none of these will inherit the Kingdom of God.”
1 Cor 6:18-19 ” Flee from sexual immorality.(A) All other sins a person commits are outside the body, but whoever sins sexually, sins against their own body.(B) 19 Do you not know that your bodies are temples(C) of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own;(D)
In 2 Tim 3:16 Paul writes, “All Scripture is God-breathed(A) and is useful for teaching,(B) rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness,(C)
The problem is there’s not much “correcting” or “rebuking” from the pulpit today. The people want “positive” sermons. I fear we have adapted the Word to fit our culture. The fact is God is immutable. He doesn’t change. His word doesn’t need editing or updated to fit our culture. Our culture has a broken moral compass. What needs to change is our lives. Our lives need to line up with the word of God. Not the other way around.
Therefore, if you are 40 years old, not married, and still a virgin, you shouldn’t be ashamed. The world may laugh at you, but God is pleased with you. Wouldn’t you rather please God than fit in with the rest of the world? He is coming back as their judge. He is coming back for us, his church, to take us as his bride. A bride “without spot or wrinkle”.
