Most often we spend our whole lives pursuing what we think will make us happy. We think, if I just had that. If I just did this or that I would be free; I would be happy. So off we go chasing things, experiences and pleasures, only to find once we’ve acquired it or experienced it we have a brief fulfillment, but soon after we’re left let down and dissatisfied.
Most often we allow our primal animalistic self centered self go the path of what the Bible calls sin. In short, we follow, often a path of death and soul destruction. In our worldly, limited wisdom we surmise, like Eve, that God is keeping us from something good. That the Bible, with all it’s “dos and don’ts” are nothing but restrictions. And we don’t want any part of that. But we fail to understand is that God, our creator, knows what will truly make us happy and fulfilled.
Let me use an analogy, that will fall short, but hopefully make the point.
Let’s say that you bought a brand new Maytag washer. Along with the washer you get an owner’s manual. The manufacturer knows the best way that that washing machine will work, how it works, and how to keep it working well for the life of the mechine.
God created us. He gave us a manual. It’s called the Holy Bible. If we follow this manual, we will have the best life possible down here on this fallen planet. It won’t be perfect, but it will help us navigate through life’s rough waters. However, like a foolish Maytag owner, we disregard the owners manual or even throw it out, thinking, I’ll figure it out on my own. I’m smart enough. I don’t need any manual to know what will make me happy.
