Normally I wouldn’t add to a previous post, but due to two recent news stories I just couldn’t pass up on the opportunity. These two recent articles further support my point. We live a hypersensitive, one sided, woke culture.
“New York school, food vendor apologizes for serving chicken and waffles on the first day of Black History Month.” Published February 4, 2023. Fox News, by Andrew Miller.
Basically, a Jr. high school in Nyack New York, that incidentally is where I was born, is accused of being culturally insensitive. It would seem that their food vendor, Aramark, served items that were construed to reenforce negative stereotypes concerning the African American Community. Fried chicken, waffles, and watermelon for dessert. Well, that’s the trifecta right there! Maybe if they served vanilla pudding for dessert instead, they would’ve gotten a pass?
The vendor responded. “While our menu was not intended as a cultural meal, we acknowledge that the timing was inappropriate, and our team should have been more thoughtful in its service,” said Aramark in a statement. “This was a mistake and does not represent the values of our company, and we are committed to doing better in the future.”
Aramark also said that it will be partnering with the school to provide sensitivity training for employees who work at the school to make sure their actions align with the district’s “vision and commitment to equity-driven work.”
“We believe this will provide a good learning opportunity to deepen understanding on the impact of systemic biases and negative stereotypes concerning the African American Community.”
Further, Aramark vowed to partner with the school and would put their employees in “sensitivity training” to ensure that this error would not happen again. (Add 30 lashes and 3 hail marys and all would be forgiven)
By the way, do you know how chicken and waffles came to be a black staple? In the 1930s and 1940’s, the black jazz clubs in Harlem would close around 3am. Nearby restaurants would offer an early breakfast to the musicians and late-night revelers. Some wanted dinner (chicken) and some wanted breakfast (waffles).
Additionally, not long ago I remember seeing a commercial on TV where a black woman was advertising Poppy’s Chicken. I don’t recall any outrage. She seemed to reinforce the said stereotype.
In another unrelated article published by Fox News, dated February 5, 2023, by Courtney O’Brien. “Coffee shop named ‘Woke’ defended after receiving backlash, boycott calls: ‘It’s disgusting’.
In short, “Woke Breakfast & Coffee” located in Coventry, CT, received online hate for its name. The owner said the name just means ‘wake up and have a cup of coffee’. She was totally unaware of the political meaning of the word “woke”. She didn’t realize that the traditional definition which means, “to wake up” would be taken to mean, the new definition, “aware of and actively attentive to important facts and issues (especially issues of race and social justice). After all, it was only added to the dictionary in 2017. On a side note, the writer’s last name is “O’Brian”. That sounds Irish. If she is, I wonder if she has corned beef and cabbage on St. Patrick’s Day? But better keep that to myself. I heard the Irish are really good at fighting.
Hey, let this serve as a warning. Be careful out there! Something that you say or do could offend somebody…somewhere…sometime. Keep your mouth shut and your head down! And be all means, get yourself some diversity and sensitivity training! Welcome the new woke America! The land of the… once free. Where only the brave dare to speak.
