“I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.” MLK
Usually I don’t share personal examples, but I couldn’t help it this time. I’m really ticked off! My youngest is doing her teacher internship at a local elementary school. Her mentor/teacher, who happens to be black, was making an attempt to explain the significance of MLK day. These were second graders.
She had everyone, including my daughter sit down. Next, she asked anyone who is white to stand up. My daughter who happens to be white (not by choice, mind you) stood up along with a few other students. Some of the kids were confused. One latina girl asked, “Mrs. B, I’m not white, but I don’t think I’m black either. What should I do?” Mrs.B replied addressing the whole class, “if both your mother and father is white, stand up. If not, stay seated because this day is about you.”
My daughter was appalled. She felt the white students were being singled out for being white. This goes right along with the teaching of CRT and “white privilege”. If you’re white you should be ashamed of yourself. You’re ancestors enslaved my ancestors. And even today, you’re the oppressors and we are the oppressed. And that America is inherently racist. This would be like us blaming Japanese US citizens for the attack on Pearl Harbor. Which, by the way we did, much to our chagrin, by rounding them up and putting in interment camps during WWII.
The irony cannot be lost. In an attempt to honor the late civil rights leader, this teacher was actually dishonoring him dividing the students based on their race.
You can bet that MLK Would not be AOK.
