Should a Christian be involved in politics? This has always been a highly controversial subject and there are believers on both sides. Some are of the opinion that Christians shouldn’t involve themselves in the affairs of this world because we’re not of this world and we should concern ourselves with winning souls for Christ. Others say, because we are Christians we have the obligation to take a stand of the side of righteousness and we are to expose the lies of the enemy. I believe that we are to do both.
One of the ways we witness is by living a righteous life. If you live a life in accordance with the word you will, by it’s very nature be making a political statement. We should be against things like abortion, sexually deviant lifestyles, lies and corruption.
There are examples from the Bible about God’s people in politics. Daniel was a Satrap (Govenor) in the Persian empire. Later he was given one-third of the kingdom of Babylon by king Belshazzar. Joseph was put in charge of Potiphar’s house, and later was second in command over all of Egypt. The Apostle Paul used his right as a Roman citizen when he was about to be beaten without a trial.
In addition, God calls us to be good stewards. We inherited a country founded by those who believed in the God of the Bible and upon Judeo-Christian principles.
If we, by our passivity, allow unrighteousness to go unchecked and unchallenged, we’re abdicating our responsibility. The Bible tells us, “When the enemy shall come in like a flood, the Spirit of the Lord shall lift up a standard against him.” Isiah 59:19(b).
Now I’m not advocating “kingdom theology”, which teaches that Christians should try and take over all positions of leadership so they can make the world better for the return of Christ. That’s not going to happen. 2 Timothy 1, tells us that just the opposite is true. Things will go from bad to worse in the last days prior to the return of Christ. However, by us pushing back against the darkness, living a righteous life, fighting against evil and corruption, speaking the truth, using our sphere of influence, exercising our rights bestowed upon us by God and our forefathers, we will be raising up that standard against the enemy.
Just this morning I received some encouragement to keep “fighting the good fight” from actor/producer Kevin Sorbo, Kevin uses his talent and clout to make movies such as “God’s not Dead” and others. He is making an impact for Christ in this dark world and deviant culture
Yes, our citizenship in ultimately in Heaven, but right now we are living on this terrestrial ball, and God expects us to stand for truth and righteousness while we’re here.
So, should a Christian be involved in politics? My answer is indubitably, yes! The Christian should be involved in all aspects of life. In the workplace, in our homes, in our recreation, in the grocery store, in the coffee shop, and in our schools. We should vote and support candidates who’s politics and beliefs line up the most with what scripture teaches. Moreover, when we see injustice, we should write and call our legislators, and peacefully protest. And if the law tries to force us to do anything contrary to scripture, we should not comply. We need to answer, “we must obey God rather than any human authority.” Acts 5:22 NLB.
Sitting on the sidelines or berrying our head in the sand is a false sense of spirituality. It’s actually dereliction of Christian duty.
By being both a United States citizen and a Christian, you are already a political Christian. The world has already labeled you as such. Get involved! “Be bold, be strong; the Lord try God is with thee ”
