Often times we get so caught up in the details of this life. We worry about so many, by and large, little things. We frantically run here and there to get our needs met. Seems we’re always in a big hurry. Hurry to get to work. Hurry to get home from work. And on the weekend, a hurry to get things done.

It always amazes me that when driving and the light turns red, that some drivers will actually race to the stop light. As if getting there first will actually help them get ahead. And then when I arrive at the same light, I want to roll down the window and yell, “congratulations! You beat everyone to the light! You win!!

I think Martha was one such person. In Luke 10:41-42 we read, 41 “Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, 42 but few things are needed—or indeed only one.[a] Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.”

We’re all trying to get our needs met. We need to get what we need to live. That’s not bad thing, but it’s far from the most important things. In Matt 6:25 we read, 25 “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes?

It’s important we take time to slow down and contemplate the weighter things in life. The needs of our soul. The inner man. The true meaning of our life. God, our family. What lasting impact are we making, if any at all. The Word tells us, “Be still, and know that I am God.” Put spiritual things first. Feed our souls like you feed your body. “Put on Christ.” Live with “eternity in our hearts.” “This life is but a vapor. 14 Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away,”

So then, instead of getting caught up in the Minutia of life, give pause to make sure you attend to the greater things, and like Mary you will have chosen the better things.
